Pond Pump Filters & Cages
Pond pump filters and cages are vital to a low maintenance pond or water feature since they help prevent the pump from clogging and overheating. These pump cages and filters are also sometimes referred to as a prefilter and they are used in place of a skimmer. Their primary function is to filter out debris and algae before it is pulled into the pump's intake.
A pump prefilter can either contain foam as part of the filter or exist as just a cage that encompasses the entire pump. Both options are equally effective especially if the pond has a main biological filter located on the opposite end from these prefilters.
One advantage of foam prefilters is they provide additional surface area for beneficial bacteria colonization while a simple cage prefilter requires the least maintenance.
