Pond Filter Media and Pond Filter Mats for Water Gardens and Koi Ponds

Pond filter media and pond filter mats are important components in biological filters for water gardens and koi ponds. They provide a substrate for beneficial bacteria to grow on as well as trapping and removing pond debris and dirt.  Beneficial bacteria breaks down and consumes organic matter that algae needs to live on, so if the organic matter and sludge are reduced then the algae is reduced as well. 

There are many types of filter media such as coarse and fine foam mats, Springflo, Bio-Blox cubes, etc. Coarse filter mats sift out larger debris and don't have to be cleaned quite as frequently, whereas fine filter mats allow more colonization of beneficial bacteria but do need to be cleaned more often. Springflo is a lightweight ribbon that filters more effectively than lava rock because it provides an increased surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow. Bio-Blox are foam cubes that provide yet another alternative to lava rock.

Cleaning of pond filter media or pond filter mats should be done with dechlorinated water or pond water only. Chlorine kills the beneficial bacteria that grows on these filtration components and therefore damages the biological activity of the pond filter.
