Pond Plants
Plants for the pond are not just for beauty they also assist the water garden's ecosystem by using excess nutrients in the water that would otherwise feed pond algae. Aquatic water plants are usually vigorous growers and require little maintenance. We feature our water hyacinth, anacharis and hornwort among some of the most vital water garden plants necessary to help maintain a lovely pond.
Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is a fast spreading, floating plant with lavendar-colored blooms. It is considered one of the best choices for bog filters as well as the traditional box filters. In northern climates water hyacinth is an annual; it does not overwinter.
Anacharis (Egeria densa) and Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum) are also referred to as oxygenators or submerged plants. They lay on the bottom of the pond year round and assist in taking extra nutrients out of the pond water in addition to providing food and cover for fish. These plants do provide minimal amounts of oxygen during daylight hours (plants consume oxygen at night) so their primary function is not viewed as an oxygenator. Anacharis and hornwort are the two most effective aquatic plants in competing against algae.
