Water Lilies for the Pond
Water lilies are among the most beautiful plants for the pond because they bloom all summer in a wide array of colors. The water lily is so lovely a plant, it inspired the celebrated artist Claude Monet to paint his famous ponds.
The water lily can either be hardy or tropical. Hardy water lilies will overwinter in cold climates and offer flowers in white, pink, red, yellow and peach colors. Tropical water lilies will not overwinter outside in colder regions and are usually enjoyed as annuals. Tropical lilies possess some of the showiest leaves of all water lilies and they have flower colors available in violet, blue, white, pink, red, yellow, peach and green hues. Tropicals also include the group of lilies that bloom at night.
Most water lilies prefer sunny locations and calm water. If they are growing in a container, they should be fertilized monthly during their growing season.
