Various controls and decoys can be used to discourage herons and predators from straying into and around ponds. So if you want to protect your goldfish, koi and frogs from possibly becoming a main dinner, the following options might be well worth considering.

Floating, faux koi can protect your fish by distracting a heron or raccoon, for example, long enough for your fish to swim to deeper waters or take cover. This koi fish decoy can be attached to monofilament (fishing) line and suspended just under the water's surface to resemble live fish.

Heron and predator controls using faux herons and/or floating alligator heads can deter an intruder from considering your pond. The faux heron should be moved periodically around the pond for best results.

Motion sensors utilizing water or sound can frighten off many pond predators. The scarecrow motion sensor hooks up to a garden hose and requires one 9-volt battery. The mini scarecrow motion sensor uses four AAA batteries.
