Pond Filters
Pond filters can be referred to as pond bio filters, waterfall filters, biological filters, pressurized filters, UV pond filters, and koi fish pond filters to name a few.
A pond bio filter, or biological filter, performs two main functions in the pond, 1) it breaks down toxic fish waste, and 2) helps maintain clear water. These types of water garden filters, can be upflow or downflow filters. An upflow filter simply means the water enters the filter at the bottom and is filtered as it flows up and eventually out of the filter. Upflow filters usually require few cleanings (often only once a season) if properly sized for the pond. Examples of upflow filters are our popular KISS pond filters, and Aquascape's Microfalls filter. A downflow filter is the reverse; the water enters from the top of the filter and flows down through filtration media and exits near the bottom of the filter back into the pond. The Tetra Tub PF series filters are examples of downflow filters. These types of filters can be among the most affordable for the backyard pond.
Pressurized filters are compact and can easily be added to ponds with pre-existing waterfalls. These filters can be placed away from the edge of the pond or even at a lower elevation than the pond. Some models can be very easily cleaned by back flushing the filter even while the pump is still running.
Submersible filters attach to the intake of the pump and are placed in the pond. Submersible filters are the most economical of all filters but do require more frequent cleaning.
UV filters can either be part of a biological filter or exist as just a UV lamp within a protective sleeve. The UV filter eliminates green water(single-celled algae) but does not control string algae. They have replaceable bulbs that generally should be replaced annually. These filters are extremely effective at controlling green water if sized according to the appropriate pump and pond.
Koi fish pond filters can include any of the pond filter systems mentioned above and are usually large-sized for a given pond to accommodate the requirements of koi (which outgrow goldfish).
